A Quick and Easy Guide to Taking a Urine Sample from Your Dog

Many people love animals and decide to keep one as a pet. Even though there are plenty of different kinds of pets out there, people usually go for dogs as they are friendly, happy and dedicated to their owners.

However, having a pet is not just having an animal outside in your yard. It is more than that, as there are a lot of things that you have to think off, the main one being your pet’s health.

One of the best ways to ensure that your pet is healthy, or to find out why it has some problems that you have recently noticed, is to take its urine sample and bring it to a vet.

Performing this once every couple of months is easier than you think, and this is a quick guide on how to do it.

Pick the right tools

  • Sterile cup – This is probably the easiest option that requires the least preparation, as your container is already sterile. Simply go to the vet and ask for one of these sterilized cups. Once you got it, you are ready to take that urine sample.
  • Any plastic container – If you already have a plastic container, that is great, all you have to do now is get it sterilized. This will take a little bit of time, but you will face no expenses. Just make sure that the container closes well; you will want to avoid that urine sample spilling out.
  • Plastic zip bag – This sounds like a risky task, but many people find plastic zip bags very useful. Simply make sure that there are holes in the bag and have it sterilized as well, and you are ready to go.

Choosing the container is a completely personal preference, just make sure that it is sterilized, to make the test results completely precise.

Remember your dog’s habits

A man is walking his dog on the field.Okay, you have the container and you are ready. It is time to think about your dog’s urination habits. For the majority of dogs who we keep in the home, morning is the usual part of the day when they actually have to go.

However, for those dogs that we keep outside in the yard, a good idea is to give them some water and take them for a walk. Even if the dog does not want to drink water at that moment, taking him for a walk will certainly present you with an opportunity to take its sample. The reason for this lies in the fact that dogs love marking their territory, which they perform by urinating. So, take the dog to a park and the moment you notice that it is sniffing around a tree more than usual, it is a clear sign that it is going to urinate.

Remember not to yell at your dog or make it feel uncomfortable, it is only going to be counter-productive. Go out for a walk, pay a bit more attention to the dog’s behavior and the right moment will present itself.

The sample collection process

Once you are out and you know your dog is about to go, there are several things that you can do to take the urine sample. Keep in mind though, it is important to avoid making any sudden movements that would interrupt the dog. Here are the two things that you can do.

  • Use a ladle – This is a very useful tool that will let you take the urine sample without any specific effort. Simply watch when the dog is about to go, and place the ladle underneath him slowly. Put the collected sample in the sterilized cup, and take it to the vet.
  • Use your own arms – Simply keep that cup in your hand, and when you see that the dog is about to go, put the cup underneath him slowly. Remember to wear protective gloves if you want to prevent urine from coming in contact with your skin.

Some people also rely on things such as cookie paper, but it is impractical for bigger dogs. These two ways are the best.

When it comes to the amount of urine you need, 25 ml is enough. Once you have the urine, take it to the vet as soon as possible. The is obvious as the fresher the urine is, the more precise the results are going to be.
