Getting a pet dog is an amazing thing. Dogs are truly lovable animals, they can always make us smile and feel better about ourselves when we are lonely. Their loyalty and love are unconditional, and they truly are friends for life. However, this doesn’t mean that you should neglect their needs.
Just because they will love you unconditionally doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try hard. In fact, this is one reason more to repay them by taking care of them as much as possible. Taking care of your pet friend doesn’t mean just being responsible when you are at home with your dog. It means that you should also take all the necessary steps so that your dog stays happy and healthy even when you are not at home.
So, here are some things you should do to make sure everything is ok with your pet when you are away.
1. Dog-proof your apartment
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that there are not a lot of items around your home or backyard which can harm your pet when you go out. Dogs are curious animals, especially when they are left alone with no one there to watch over them.
Make sure that you put away all sharp and small objects that they can swallow accidentally. They can harm their teeth as well. You can leave dog toys lying around, but nothing else.
So, there should be no way your dog can reach any objects which are valuable or potentially harmful to them.
2. Tire your dog out before going out
One of the biggest problems when leaving dogs home alone is that they have all that energy, but nothing to focus it on. In these moments of despair, they turn their focus towards objects at your home, and when you return, you find a big mess in your whole house.
This is why you should take your dog out for a long walk before leaving the house. Use this time to play with your pet, and spend all that unused energy. No matter if your dog enjoys playing catch or simply running around the park with other dogs, make an effort to keep your pet active and, at the end of it all, tired.
Once you come home, feed your pet right away and go wherever it is you planned on going. This is how you will make ensure that your dog will be calm. It’ll probably sleep most of them time while you are away.
3. Give them something to keep them busy while you’re away
Of course, after your dog has rested and gained back its energy, it will probably feel bored without you around. This is why it’s a good idea to give them something to play with. Most dogs have a favourite toy they like to chase around the house to keep themselves entertained. This is a good place to start.
There are also a lot of food-dispensing toys for dogs. These dispensers release bits of food over time, and this is definitively something that will occupy your pet’s time.
4. Train your dog to be alone
If your dog is still not fully grown, you can teach it, little by little, to be more independent. A lot of people have problems with their pets due to a thing called separation anxiety. All dogs get bored and frustrated when their owners leave, but if your pet screams and whines hysterically as you are preparing to leave, the chances are that your pet has separation anxiety.
In this case, you should consider searching for pet sitting services. Find professionals who can take care of your dog while you are away; there is no way around it.
However, if your dog is not yet fully grown, you can train it to get used to being alone. Start by leaving for half an hour and increase the timeframe gradually. Another method includes leaving your dog in the other room and teaching it to lie on the bed alone without you anywhere near.
With these 4 tips, you will be able to relax when you go out, and you won’t have to worry about whether your pet is doing ok. Of course, remember to leave enough food and water for your pet. There is no point in letting them be hungry or thirsty.
