Great things come in small sizes — and Chihuahua owners know that well enough. Being one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, the Chihuahua is a breed like no other. Mexican food is good and Taco Bell is cute. The movie ‘Taco Bell’ that was aired in the late 1990s, featuring a talking Chihuahua named Taco Bell, has indeed introduced the world to these super-cute dogs. Since the film’s release, Chihuahuas have gained more exposure and popularity all around the world.
Here are 5 cool facts about them that make them so special, and make you feel like you’ll want them for yourself, too!
1. They’re so small that you can literally take them almost anywhere with you
Despite its tiny size, the Chihuahua is loved by many for being just, well, tiny. In fact, the Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world and it only comes in one size. Its small body, although perceived by many as a disadvantage rather than an advantage, is one of the reasons why dog lovers choose to have them as part of their families. The Chihuahuas are so small that dog owners can take them almost anywhere with them. While it is common to see dog owners carrying their Chihuahuas in their handbags, that does not mean you should attempt to sneak yours into public places whenever and wherever you please. Sure, keeping Chihuahuas in apartments (even in those that do not allow household pets) is not as difficult as keeping bigger dogs. You may think that you can get away with this, but bear in mind that Chihuahuas are compulsive barkers.
2. They have one of the longest lifespans
Do you know that Chihuahuas can live up to 20 years on average? Yes, this is a dog breed with a very long lifespan, perhaps one of the longest in the canine world. While smaller dog breeds tend to have longer lifespans than larger ones, one of the reasons why Chihuahuas can live longer than most dogs is due to their health. In short, they face fewer health problems compared to other dogs. Indeed, few health problems mean less medical bills, but the health of your furry friend should nevertheless remain a priority.
3. Chihuahuas come in various colours
Chihuahuas come in many colours. Their smooth coats vary from black to white, red to blue, chocolate to cream, and the list goes on — you can also find Chihuahuas with coats in shades that are combinations of the aforementioned colours. Moreover, when coat comes to mind, every Chihuahua has a different pattern, making them even more unique. However, for those of you who fancy dogs with multi-coloured coats or attractive markings, then the long-haired Chihuahua may be just the pooch you have been looking for.
4. Chihuahuas are hyperactive and fun
One of the Chihuahua’s most endearing characteristics is its charisma. Indeed, Chihuahuas are always enthusiastic in whatever they do, especially when they are playing outdoors. While they are generally hyperactive, they should not over-exercise. Like most other dogs, Chihuahuas require just the right amount of exercise, preferably twenty minutes of walking outside, twice a day. This is to ensure that they always stay active, healthy, and happy.
5. Chihuahuas are intelligent dogs
Never underestimate the Chihuahua for its size. Chihuahuas are smart and manageable, especially when they are trained early. They make very good apartment tenants, too. However, please note that, when training your furry friend, remember that it is very intelligent. That being said, they can be stubborn at times. However, with the right attitude and approach, training a Chihuahua can be a very rewarding experience for both man and beast. Always bear in mind that the training of your pet Chihuahua should be fun and motivational, never boring and mundane.
